One of the most important parts of being a mom or wife is praying for your husband and children. This is something that God put on my heart early on in my marriage and I want to share with you how I put together my family prayer binder.
It’s not a journal that I use every single day anymore or share with family members but it is a private way for me to keep tract of all the requests I want to consistently bring in intercession (prayer for others).
One thing I have learned is that God hears our prayers as family women.

If we are faithful to the calling to support our families in prayer, God will see our persistence, skillfulness and determination to do what is right. Then he will oftentimes answer these requests so quickly we didn’t even notice. Other times it will take longer than expected but will end up with super big results.
For example, I used to always pray for my husband to grow in the gift of administration and then one day out of the blue he started not only being able to organize his life schedule, but he became great at administrating entire conferences. I knew this had a direct connection to the private prayers in my devotional time.
Private Prayer has Public Consequences.
Usually we think of consequences as a bad thing, but really consequences are something produced by a cause or necessarily following from a set of conditions.
There are both good and bad consequences. And there are necessary results from following a set of conditions, in this case the conditioning of prayer.
When we pray it is inevitable that change will occur because we are talking to an unchanging God.
Here are a couple Scriptures to encourage us:
- The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with. Elijah, for instance, human just like us, prayed hard that it wouldn’t rain, and it didn’t—not a drop for three and a half years. Then he prayed that it would rain, and it did. The showers came and everything started growing again. James 5:16-18 MSG
- The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16 NKJV
- And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? Luke 18:7 NIV
It is not about how loud we pray, how long we pray, how anointed we sound or how dramatic we make it; it’s all about believing in the One we are talking to…It’s about being you.
I remember a time I went into my prayer time with preconceived notions of what God wanted me to do. I began saying words that really didn’t have much intellectual meaning to me, “Heavenly Father, thank You for your presence…I want to give you honor and glory.”
Then I heard the Lord say, “Jade, it’s not that serious. I just want to know what’s on your heart.” And I started laughing out loud. In that moment I was reminded that God is not into our performance as much as He is into us as people.
He wants a relationship, not a perfectly outlined monologue.
From time to time it helps me to remember that He simply wants to hear from me, talk to me, respond to me and listen to my heart. Then He’ll give me wise words, sometimes these are words of correction but even then it is said in a way that I can receive with grace.
On the other hand, having a prayer journal is a great guide to ensuring that I consistently pray for my husband and children to come. It has been major in keeping me on tract, asking family members for prayer requests and consistently using Scriptures to pray for them. This is the “effective” and “fervent” side of prayer we read about in James 5:16.
If you want to make a family prayer journal here are a few easy steps to get started. Of course, you can use your own creativity to make this all your own! (And if family members don’t seem open to giving you specific prayer requests, ask God what He wants you to pray or what their needs/pains are; He’ll show you their hearts in a fresh way.)
Steps to make your Family Prayer Binder:
- Get a binder
- Pick your favorite colors (colors also have Biblical meaning that can be fun to play with)
- Section by name or requests
- Add relevant Scriptures for each person or request
- What days will you pray for each topic
- Give yourself grace if you skip a day
- Have fun praying and be flexible!
- Watch the results of prayer and celebrate often
One more tip before I share my journal with you…this is very preventative to problems in your family rising like arguments, moral failures, breakdowns of family members. It is also protective of your family coming into unnecessary sickness, accidents and harm. This does not mean bad things will never happen but oftentimes our prayers counter issues that we don’t know were a potential challenge to our family’s well being.
9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
This is our promise as we pray: He will give His angles charge over us and bad things may come near us but will not touch us. We can believe this by faith for our lives as Christian women.
There was a really bad lightening storm that almost hit my home once; lightening struck a massive tree but it did not hit my home or the vehicles in our driveway. Instead it stopped right short of one of our vehicles, falling into the driveway. Another time I was in a car accident but did not get harmed in the process. Other times I have battled with sickness but have eventually overcome.
Troubles may come but we will see God’s protection in the midst of even hard situations. And tracing your prayers will make it more evident when this happens.
